17 % of Ireland is covered in turf (peat) bogs. The bog has its own ecosystem, its unique plants and animals, but it also plays an important commercial role in energy generation. At Shannonbridge you can join the West Offaly Railway for a trip though the bog and see how turf is extracted. In less than an hour you will be introduced to the area’s flora and fauna and its economic importance under expert guidance. There will even be an opportunity to practice your traditional turf cutting skills.
